Yeringberg

There are few wineries in the Yarra Valley with the prestigious history of Yeringberg. The de Pury family were pioneers of the region, having one of the first vineyards in the region over 100 years ago.

The original vineyard was ripped out when the demand for Australian wine slowed to a trickle, however, the site was replanted in the 1970s and is one of the great sites of the modern Yarra. You will see Chardonnay, Roussanne and Marsanne as well as a little Viognier in whites, a little Pinot Noir and Shiraz as well as their elite Cabernet blend - one of the most collectable in the country.

Everything is done traditionally in the winery, the trends of the modern day don't extend past the winery doors. In James Halliday's opinion, "...(Yeringberg) are renowned for wines of finesse and elegance that epitomise the finest the region can produce."

Yeringberg’s ‘Yeringberg’ cabernet blend 2021 scored 98 points in the latest Companion, the Yeringberg Marsanne Roussanne 2021 scored 97 points, and both the Rosé 2022 and Pinot Noir 2021 scored 96. This place is not just about historic charm; the wines are good, now. Yeringberg was founded in 1863 and yet production, on a good deal of prime agricultural land, is still in the vicinity of only 1500 dozen annually. Modesty is the way here. Quality is a given. These wines are the perfect dinner table companions."

"A 19th century Yarra Valley pioneer, Yeringberg’s renaissance began when the 3rd generation wine grower, Guill and Katherine de Pury began replanting vines in 1969, making their first commercial wine in ’74. Since ’08, the wines have been made by daughter Sandra while her brother, David, who has a PhD in plant physiology, manages the vineyards and Yeringberg's grass-fed lamb and cattle. Committed to the future, a new winery is in design phase and a new vine program began in ’20 to mitigate against climate change and phylloxera, establishing 2 new vineyard sites on south- and east-facing slopes. The future could not be more exciting for one of the Yarra’s oldest and most important producers."
